Matthew Hubbell received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, summa cum laude, from The Citadel in 1988. He was the Second Honor graduate, finishing with a grade point average of 3.9. As a senior, Hubbell was a Cadet Lt. Colonel and the Commander of the Fourth Battalion. He was the President of the Inn of Court, The Citadel’s pre-law society. Hubbell also studied English literature, history, and art at St. John’s College, Oxford University in England during the summers of 1986 and 1987.

Hubbell attended the University of South Carolina School of Law and received his Juris Doctor degree, cum laude, in 1991. He was honored by selection for the Law Review, The Order of the Coif, and the Order of the Wig and Robe.

During law school, Hubbell furthered his professional education by clerking for a large law firm in Columbia. Later, as a law clerk at the United States Attorney’s Office, Hubbell assisted in the prosecution of “Operation Lost Trust,” which resulted in the conviction of numerous members of the South Carolina General Assembly for bribery and extortion.
